Small-Diameter MFL+TFI Inspection Case

The Challenge

A natural gas pipeline client in Anhui Province required an MFL+TFI in-line inspection of a small-diameter pipeline of 273mm. For the line with a small caliber, it is difficult for TFI tools to meet the standard request of excitation. The line, about 128km in length, with the design pressure of 4.0MPa, operating pressure 2.5MPa, and wall thickness of 5.6mm, should be inspected by MFL and TFI tools in the flow velocity of 2.3m/s. To ensure a smooth process and achieve accurate data, MFL and TFI tools should be custom-built, and the design of the TFI tool is a technological difficulty.

The Solution

The IP team worked hard to design and build new MFL and TFI tools for weeks, meeting the testing requirements. On March 16, 2022, the MFL tool run successfully, 2.7m in length and 170kg in weight, with the upstream pressure 2.99Mpa, downstream 2.28Mpa, and differential pressure 0.71Mpa. In addition, on March 17, 2022, the TFI tool, 2.3m in length and 165kg in weight, with the upstream pressure 3.01Mpa, downstream pressure 2.33Mpa, and differential pressure 0.68Mpa, completed the inspection work successfully, with accurate data achieved.

The Results

• Custom-built MFL and TFI tools successfully designed and built.

• Successful inspection of the small-diameter pipeline performed.

• Accurate inspection data received thanks to the optimized and customized tools.
